Hollyhocks are the epitome of the old, harmonious Danish garden. In old towns you often see hollyhocks in all sorts of colours outside the crooked half-timbered houses, where the large plants thrive between the old cobblestones. Often the hollyhocks grow well above the eaves of the roofs and add life and warmth to the atmosphere in the street. Hollyhocks are very frugal and can really thrive in tiny cracks between tiles, but they also thrive in ordinary garden soil.
Hollyhocks thrive best in sunny and sheltered places, but here at Lindelyst we also have them in regular beds, where they are untied and exposed to wind and weather and they bloom beautifully throughout the season. In early autumn, however, we often experience that some of the flower stems fall over or break off during stormy weather. Therefore, a sheltered spot, for example in a courtyard or up a hedge or similar, is even better.
Hollyhocks can survive for decades and become more and more beautiful as time goes by, and if your hollyhocks thrive, they become bushy and produce many stems.
This is a mix of hollyhocks in all nuances of red - pink, rosa, dark red etc. Have fun
