This field pea is grown primarily for its beautiful pink-purple flowers and its ability to improve the soil in which it grows, and not so much for the eating quality of its peas, although these are edible.
The pea does not require support, but grows in a dense bushy form and effectively shuts out weeds. The pea flowers are large and beautifully bicoloured in dark purple and pink and there are many of them.
Field peas are good plants for the soil because its roots loosen the soil and it brings good nutrients to the surface. That's why it is often used in the vegetable garden as a catch crop.
