Lilac is the messenger of summer. You probably recognise lilacs from ordinary gardens, country gardens and windbreaks in the countryside.

Lilac is a fantastic shrub that attracts insects, birds and larger animals because it provides both nourishment (in the form of flowers) and hiding places (in the form of its dense growth) and in addition, it looks and smells great during the flowering period. Another plus is that it can be used in cooking as a flavouring and colouring agent for juices, desserts and much more. A final plus is that the branches can be taken in and used as heavy and fresh bouquets. In other words, a plant that really just keeps on giving!

However, you need to be patient when growing lilac bushes from seed. The bush itself is fast-growing, but it will probably not flower for 3-4 years.

The best thing to do is to germinate lilacs outdoors in pots or in a vacant flower bed, where they can be left for the first couple of years and you can keep the soil moist and reasonably weed-free. After that, it can easily be moved to the permanent growing site. The seeds are very vigorous and germinate within a few days when the temperature is right.
